New Hyde Park has an extremely rich history, with roots dating as far back as the early 1600s amongst the first Dutch and English settlers to the United States. After being settled for close to three centuries, New Hyde Park officially became an incorporated village on August 19, 1927. Presently, New Hyde Park accommodates about 10,000 citizens for which men hold a negligible majority at 51.4% of the population with a median age of 42. Education is instrumentally important and New Hyde Park has an accomplished, thriving school system. Over this most recent academic year, the 2013-2014 school year, the New Hyde Park School District and each individual school within the district obtained a rating of ‘good standing,’ indicating that all NYS standards and necessary criteria have been fulfilled. Moreover, three schools were met with more praise as ‘reward schools,’ which displays the schools ability to improve in an assortment of categories over the past year. Such triumphant schools were New Hyde Park Road School, Hillside Grade School, and Manor Oaks William Bowie School. The praise continues to mount, as two schools within New Hyde Park garnered further honors as members of the top 2000 public high schools within the US in 2013 according to Newsweek. These schools were Herricks High School and New Hyde Park Memorial High School at 177 and 256, respectively. Athletics also play a large role in New Hyde Park. At New Hyde Park Memorial High School, for example, they excel in sports like basketball and tennis. The girls’ varsity basketball team won the Class B NYS Championship during the 2002-2003 season. More recently, during the 2008-2009 tennis season, the boy’s team went undefeated, ultimately winning the division and conference.

New Hyde Park also has its fair share of appetizing restaurants and eateries. Residents flock to popular places, such as: Luigi’s Restaurant & Bar, Umberto’s, Brasserie 214 at the Inn at New Hyde Park, Marbella Restaurant, and Bramasole Italian Restaurant. Although these are just a small representation of options available in New Hyde Park, they help to illuminate the mixed cuisine that can be experienced. Beyond the restaurant scene, there is much to wallow in. Nuzzi Field and Memorial Park are great places to spend your time. Nuzzi Field has recently been totally overhauled with a new playground and a rock climbing wall. It also features a perfect baseball field. Memorial Park offers many amenities like tennis courts, basketball courts, a baseball field, and playgrounds for kids. There is also a memorial for 9/11 victims.

During the summer, there is a youth Children’s Summer Recreation Program available for kids aged 6-12 at Memorial Park. If looking to get involved further, people can engage in activities like community clean-up day in honor of Earth Day. Community minded members can even volunteer to join the auxiliary police force to help the local officers patrol the community and assist in maintaining safety at large events. Avid readers should be sure to explore the two libraries, Hillside Library and Elmont Library. Both are less than ten years old and offer large collections of literary works.
