In the late 17th century, the history of Bethpage began. In what is now known as the Bethpage Purchase, Thomas Powell purchased a large area of land from local Native American tribes, the Secatogue, and Matinecock natives. This area composed present-day East Farmingdale, Old Bethpage, South Farmingdale, Melville, Farmingdale, Plainview and Plainedge. Today, Bethpage boasts a population of roughly 17,000 individuals, of whom 52.6% are women. The median resident age is 44, while the median family income as of 2012 was just over $87,000. Bethpage is the former home of the Grumman Corporation, which was one of the main job providers and economic stimulants to the area. Grumman employed 23,000 people in its heyday and was very involved with America’s success during the Cold War, ultimately being involved with the Lunar Module space program that enabled the first Americans and humans to set foot on the moon.

The academic realm in Bethpage is very strong and highly renowned. There are five schools within the district, all of which were regarded as in ‘good standing’ for the 2013-2014 school year according to the New York State Department of Education. This is the highest designation achievable. Furthermore, Bethpage Senior High School gathered extra admiration, being deemed a ‘reward school,’ meaning that over the past year, the school has made strides in multiple categories. This school was also considered in the top 400 of the best 2000 public high schools in the nation during 2013. Bethpage Senior High School was officially ranked 353 by Newsweek. The high schools maintains a competitive lacrosse and football program.

Bethpage State Park is a world-class facility that offers much appeal and ways for villagers to stay active and involved. Its offerings include: five golf courses, a restaurant, tennis courts, and skiing paths. It is one of the best spots in the area to hone your golf skills; the Black course is a testament to this as it hosted the US Open multiple times and as recently as 2009. The park also offers biking, sledding, and picnicking areas so it is a great option for a family outing.
